TV series being filmed

Wednesday 29: A New Zealand film crew is in Rarotonga for six weeks shooting for a new children’s television show called Paradise Café.
Dave Gibson, managing director of the Gibson Group in Wellington is one of two producers for Paradise Café.
He says the crew will be here for another five weeks working on the show which is due to air on BBC in the UK in January.
Gibson Group and BBC have joined forces to produce the 13 half hour episodes of the show. NZ On Air has provided $2.6 million in funding towards the production of the show.
The comedy mystery series is based around British teens Robbo and Megan who arrive on the island with their marine biologist father and decide to set up a café to earn some extra pocket money.
Even though the ‘island’ is not identified as Rarotonga, this show will include some local cast members, extras and the use of some Maori phrases says Gibson.
Two units are filming in Rarotonga – one for the acting scenes and another gathering footage of the environment – even underwater scenes.
Gibson says they have hired Cook Island Divers to help with the sea diving and Akura Fishing Charters so that a lot of sea and underwater filming can be done.
The key site for the show is Betela beach where the ‘café’ is located and other locations include Highland Paradise, Blackrock, Crown Beach Resort and snorkelling scenes at The Fruits of Rarotonga beach in Titikaveka.
The last production Gibson did in the Cooks was the 1984 movie The Silent One. Many locals, especially Aitutakians will remember this film based on the book – the story of Jonasi, the young boy sent from the sea to grow up in an isolated Pacific village.
